Rare and original, 1880's Milk Glass Backed, Advertising Paperweight for “The Caligraph” Brand Typewriter manufactured by the American Writing Machine Compan of Hartford, Connecticut. This very rare, Milk Glass backed Advertising Paperweight features an image of “The Caligraph 2” Brand Typewriter - the first typewriter to be produced with a double keyboard. With no shift key, a double keyboard was needed: black keys for uppercase characters and white keys for lowercase. Text above the illustration reads “The Caligraph. / Compliments of Newman & Son, Agents for South East.” Text below the image reads "805 7th Street, Washington. / American Building, Baltimore”. The Paperweight is made of glass with a thick wafer of white milk glass on the reverse. The advertising text and image is printed on the upper surface of the milk glass wafer and is viewed through the thick, clear glass of the Paperweight. The Paperweight measures approx. 2 1/2" by 4” by 3/4” and is copyright 1882 by the manufacturer “Barnes & Abrams Co.” of Syracuse, New York. This very rare and attractive, Milk Glass Backed, Advertising Paperweight is in very good to excellent condition. There is a small flake on the side of the Paperweight at the upper left hand corner but no other chips, cracks, breaks or repairs of any kind. The surface of the glass is clean and crisp with no significant surface scratches, abrasions, discoloration or wear of any kind - no serious scratches, wear and no damage of any kind and the surface retains a brilliant shine. Overall this rare Caligraph Typewriter Advertising Paperweight is very attractive and it displays beautifully.
